Customizing your virtual tour and branding

5 min read

When a prospective student steps onto your physical campus for a guided tour, your team doesn't just deliver a generic script. An aspiring student-athlete gets a tour tailored to varsity life, guided by a current athlete. A prospective family gets a warm introduction tailored to their specific concerns.

Your campus tours are highly customized, dynamic, and context-specific. Your virtual tour should be too.

Here's how Trafalgar Castle School, East Tennessee State University, Grand View University, and University of North Carolina Wilmington infuse their brand voice, look and feel into their virtual tours.

Sounds familiar: picking the right voice for your tour

The face and voice that guides a visitor through a virtual tour fundamentally shapes how they relate to your virtual tour and institution.

To build an authentic connection, schools are pairing the appropriate tour guide with the theme in focus to deliver more engaging and memorable tours for their audiences.

Trafalgar Castle School: age-appropriate storytelling

For an independent school spanning multiple grade levels, audience segmentation is key. Trafalgar Castle School recognized that a younger student and a high school student have different school experiences, and while they use common spaces throughout the school, they also have areas unique to their grade levels.  Whether it’s where a Grade 5 class presents their projects in the Junior Collaboration Space, or where Grade 11 students are conducting experiments in the Senior School Biology lab, Trafalgar Castle School solved this by customizing their tour guide and audio guide personas for their age-specific School Tours.

When a younger student explores the Junior School tour, the voice and tone reflect a younger, welcoming peer. When an older student explores the Senior School, the tour guide is a friendly high school-aged student with an audio voice. This ensures the narrative is always relatable, building immediate trust with the specific age group exploring the screen.

East Tennessee State University (ETSU): A voice for every tour

East Tennessee State University (ETSU) realized that the student who leads an "Academics" tour shouldn't sound exactly the same as the student leading the "Student Life" tour. By using distinct voice profiles and unique tour guide personas for each of their specialized themed tours, ETSU ensures that the digital guide always matches the subject matter.

An enthusiastic guide walks students through the residence halls, while a more focused, professional persona introduces the state-of-the-art laboratory spaces. This can also reflect your in-person tours, if you have multiple student guides providing their experiences and stories to visitors on campus during their visit.

It’s more than a logo: customizing your tour branding

Many institutions have a core brand along with dozens of sub-brands, from schools and colleges to athletics or campus dining departments. These unique identities can be featured throughout a virtual visit.

Circuit allows marketing teams to customize the Tour Splash Page, Splash Page colour, the Tour logos, and tour guide for each individual tour, creating a well-rounded and deeply immersive brand experience tour-by-tour.

Grand View University: amplifying athletic pride

Athletic recruitment is driven by passion and pride. When a prospective student-athlete enters Grand View University’s Athletics and Recreation Tour, they aren't greeted by the standard academic logo.

Grand View University customized the tour using their Vikings Athletics branding to help future athletes feel welcomed by the Vikings team culture from the beginning.

University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW): cohesive sub-branding across campus

Sub-branding can be simple to set up in the beginning, but what happens when the brand strategy shifts? Most institutions rebrand or refresh guidelines every few years, and when that takes place, every digital property quietly goes out of date and needs to be updated.

In late summer 2025, the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) started a rebrand that affected the primary and secondary branding assets across the institution, including a new primary colour, an updated main logo, and a new Seahawk athletics logo. Since UNCW's tour leverages these sub-brands on their multi-tour experience, these updates were necessary to maintain consistency across their site.

Ahead of their rebranding launch, their team used Circuit's CMS to edit multiple tours by swapping out branding and colours. By drafting these edits, they could preview and schedule the new branding to go live to align with when the new brand campaign was launching.  This allowed UNCW to continue highlighting their unique department identities and keep their tour experience cohesive for visitors.

The Takeaway

In a student’s digital experience, the details make a big difference. A virtual tour that goes beyond a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach can leave a lasting impression on prospective students. Trafalgar Castle School, ETSU, Grand View University, and UNCW didn’t need to rebuild their tours to achieve this. By introducing authentic tour guides, highlighting department identities, and tapping into student and school pride, they showcased what makes their schools unique and connected with each visitor online.
